Xavier University of Louisiana Library: Designing a Space Around Student Needs

A welcoming lounge area encourages students to gather, connect, and learn.

When Xavier University of Louisiana decided to update its library, the goal was clear: create a more modern, engaging environment for students. What wasn't clear was why students weren't fully utilizing the space as intended.

Rather than jumping straight into furniture selections and floor plans, Workplace Solutions took a step back.

Because every successful project begins with understanding the people who use the space, our team recommended conducting student surveys to gain firsthand insight into the library experience. We wanted to understand how students were working, where the space was falling short, and what changes would make the greatest impact.

Listening Before Designing

Flexible seating options support both independent and informal collaboration.

The survey revealed valuable insights about how students used the library and the challenges they faced throughout the space. Students shared feedback about study preferences, collaboration needs, privacy, access to power, comfort, and the types of environments that helped them be most productive.

These findings became the foundation for every design decision that followed.

At Workplace Solutions, we believe the best spaces are not designed around furniture—they are designed around people. By listening first, we were able to create solutions that directly addressed the needs and preferences of the students who use the library every day.

A Library Built for Choice

Integrated writable surfaces help support brainstorming, problem-solving, and group projects.

Using survey feedback as a guide, the updated library was designed to offer a variety of experiences within a single environment.

Collaborative tables support group work and discussion. Lounge settings provide comfortable spaces for informal learning and connection. Acoustic screens and privacy-focused workstations help students concentrate when focused study is needed. Flexible furniture arrangements allow the space to adapt to changing needs throughout the day.

The result is an environment that supports multiple learning styles and gives students the freedom to choose the setting that works best for them.

Honoring Xavier's Identity

Private study rooms provide dedicated space for focused work and small-group collaboration.

Throughout Xavier University's campus, African art and cultural influences are thoughtfully integrated into the environment. Rather than introducing an entirely new design language, Workplace Solutions embraced and expanded upon that existing identity.

Patterns, textiles, colors, and visual elements were carefully selected to complement the artwork and artifacts already present throughout the university. The distinctive leaf-inspired installation and coordinated finishes help create a cohesive visual experience that feels authentic to Xavier while bringing warmth, energy, and character into the library.

The design not only serves functional needs but also reinforces a sense of place and connection to the university's culture and history.

The Result

Custom acoustics inspired by African art create a strong connection to Xavier University’s identity.

The completed library is more than an updated space—it is a reflection of the students and community it serves.

By combining research, user feedback, thoughtful planning, and culturally responsive design, Workplace Solutions helped Xavier University create a library that is welcoming, functional, and uniquely its own.

The project demonstrates our belief that successful environments begin with understanding people first. When design decisions are informed by real user needs, spaces become more effective, more meaningful, and ultimately more successful.
